Desk Neck: What Helps and What Just Feels Nice
The tightness across the top of the shoulders and up into the neck is the single most common complaint we hear at the counter, and it is almost always a posture-load problem rather than a muscle problem.
A massager helps. It does not fix the cause, and it is worth being clear about which is which.
Why it happens
The head weighs about eleven pounds. Held directly over the spine, the load on the neck extensors is modest. Held forward — as it is when you lean toward a monitor — the effective load multiplies rapidly with the angle.
The upper trapezius and levator scapulae then hold that position for hours. They are not injured; they are working a long shift with no breaks, and they respond by becoming tight and tender.
What a massager does about it
It increases local blood flow, reduces the sensation of tightness, and interrupts the guarding cycle. That is genuine relief and it is worth having.
It does not change how far forward your head is at 3pm tomorrow. If you use a massager every evening and change nothing else, you will need it every evening.
The three changes that do fix it
Raise the monitor so the top of the screen is at or just below eye level. This is the single highest-value change and it costs nothing if you have a stack of books.
Bring the keyboard closer so your elbows stay by your sides. A keyboard pushed away to make room for paper drags the shoulders forward all day.
Move every half hour. Not exercise — just standing up, rolling the shoulders, looking at something twenty feet away. The tissue objects to duration far more than to position.
Using a neck massager sensibly
Shiatsu neck units work the muscle at the back and sides of the neck and the top of the shoulders. That is where the load is and it is the right target.
Keep the pressure moderate. Many units let you increase pressure by pulling the handles, and it is easy to overdo it — the neck bruises more readily than the back.
Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. Heat, where the unit offers it, is useful here because stiffness is the dominant complaint.
Where not to work
The front and sides of the neck contain the carotid arteries and the thyroid, and should not be worked with any percussion or shiatsu device. Stay on the muscle at the back.
Do not use percussion devices on the cervical spine itself. If you use a gun near the neck at all, use the softest head, the lowest speed, and stay on the muscle either side of the spine.
When it is not desk neck
Pain radiating down an arm, numbness, tingling, weakness in the hand, headaches at the base of the skull that are getting worse, or neck pain following an impact are all reasons to see a clinician rather than buy a device.
The same goes for pain that wakes you at night or that has not shifted at all in six weeks.
A sensible combination
Monitor at eye level, keyboard close, a break every half hour, and a shiatsu cushion for fifteen minutes in the evening. The first three change the load; the fourth makes the day’s accumulated load easier to carry.
The showroom on S Durango Dr has cushions and neck units on display — get in touch or come in.
